MVCAC'S SECOND COMMUNITY MURAL

The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council is pleased to present its SECOND community mural!

Partnering with the City of Maple Valley, King County Parks & Recreation Department, the Maple Valley Historical Society, The Maple Valley Community Center, and the Lake Wilderness Arboretum Foundation, the Maple Valley Creative Arts Council's 2021 Paint By Tunnels mural designed by MV resident and artist Jackie Riedel makes local and regional history stories interactive and publicly available.

Inspired by Maple Valley’s History, this second mural is located in the tunnel on the Cedar to Green Rivers Trail under Witte Road, near the Maple Valley Community Center, Historical Society, and Library. 

Getting there:

1. Park at the Maple Valley Community Center & Maple Valley Historical Society (click below or on the map for directions);
2. Walk to either side toward the back of the Historic Gibbon General Store;
3. Continue down the steps to access the Cedar to Green Rivers Trail;
4. The tunnel will be to your left.

Maple Valley Legacy Site & Maple Valley Farmers' Market

The Legacy Site is a 50-acre parcel of undeveloped land located on Maple Valley-Black Diamond Road/SR 169 across from Rock Creek Elementary School with Lake Wilderness frontage. There are many trails to explore including the Gnome Trail.

The Maple Valley Farmers' Market runs consecutive Saturdays from May through September.

Historic Gibbons General Store & Maple Valley Historic Society Museum

The two museums are located next to the Maple Valley Community Center in the heart of the City of Maple Valley and are the Gibbon-Mezzavilla General Store and the Fire Engine museum. The Gibbon-Mezzavilla General Store is the restored original store of the Greater Maple Valley area that was frequented by early residents. The Fire Engine museum houses the restored 1926 Howard Cooper Fire Engine which was the original Fire Engine used by Fire District 43 Volunteers. In addition to the Howard Cooper, there are displays depicting the early years of the Fire District. The Gibbon-Mezzavilla General Store and the Fire Engine Museum are open the first Saturday of each month from 10:00am to 2:00pm or by appointment.

Maple Valley Community Center

The Greater Maple Valley Community Center was incorporated in February, 1976 by area citizens who recognized a need to consolidate some existing services into a central community facility serving the communities of Maple Valley, Hobart, Ravensdale and unincorporated King County within the Tahoma School District boundaries.

Lake Wilderness Arboretum

Unlike most public gardens, the Lake Wilderness Arboretum did not begin with an endowment, an estate, nor a city or state to back it. It didn’t even begin with a location. In 1965 George Tersiisky, a Bulgarian immigrant, and a small group of supporters, including Kent Mayor Isabel Hogan, Ardis Johnson, and Lillie Wagner, organized and incorporated the South King County Arboretum Foundation as a 501c3 nonprofit. The Foundation’s goal was to establish an arboretum in south King County. 



Just as the Arboretum came into existence through the hard work and commitment of volunteers over 50 years ago, we still rely on the efforts of volunteers today.

Lake Wilderness Arboretum's Tribal Life Trail

June 5, 2010 marked the grand opening of the Tribal Life Trail, a trail-style demonstration garden that focuses on plants used by native peoples of the Puget Sound area. Food, medicine, utility, clothing, and ceremonial uses are the gifts these plants provided. Ethnobotany is the study of native plant and native people relationships. Taking a closer look at five native plants (Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Salal, Vine Maple, and Western Sword Fern) and their uses gives us a true appreciation for them and encourages us to be good stewards of our lands. Since 2008, the Tribal Life Trail has been managed and maintained by the Washington State University Extension Master Gardeners program.

The Lodge At Lake Wilderness

The award-winning Lake Wilderness Lodge was constructed in the early 1950’s. At the same time a 2,400-foot airstrip was added to encourage visitors to take air taxis to the resort. Some 8,000 people had attended the lodge’s 1950 opening celebration that included an air show utilizing the new air strip near the building.

Lake Wilderness Park

The City of Maple Valley obtained the Lake Wilderness Park from King County in January 2003. At 117 acres, Lake Wilderness Park is a large regional park with lots of prime shoreline, preserved forestland, and meandering pathways.

Running through the middle of Lake Wilderness Park is Jenkins Creek, a tributary for Big Soos Creek, which empties into the Green River. The park also includes three wetlands. A variety of birds and animals also make their home in Lake Wilderness Park, including deer, beaver, raccoon, hawks, wrens, and ruffed grouse.

Annual events held in Lake Wilderness Park include: Fishing Derby & Fishermen's Breakfast, Maple Valley Days, Music in the Park, 4th of July Celebration with Fireworks, Kid's Festival and Family Concert, and Outdoor Movie Under the Stars. To view a list of current special events click here.
